Easter Carrot Cookies For Dogs
Want to include your pup in your Easter Celebration? Try a batch of these delicious and nutritious cookies your dog is sure to love! You can hide them along with your Easter eggs so your pup can play along. This quick and easy recipe is sure to please!
Ingredients:
2 Cups of grated carrots
1/2 Cup of dog kibble
2 Jars of beef baby food (small jars)
1/2 Cup of plain non-fat yogurt
2 Cups of wheat flour
1 Teaspoon of baking powder
Directions:
1. Preheat Oven to 400 degrees
2. Put the dog food in a food processor or blender and grind to a fine powder.
3. In a large bowl, combine the kibble powder, carrots, yogurt, and baby food and blend well.
4. Add baking powder to mixture and blend.
5. Once these ingredients are blended, slowly add the wheat flour.
6. Knead with your hands for at least three to five minutes. The dough will be "chunky" because of the carrots. (If you don’t want chunky dough, you can blend with the dog food in a food processor.)
7. On a flat, floured surface roll out dough to desired thickness.
8. Using Easter cookie cutters, cut out shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet.
9. Bake for 20 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown.

Dog Breed of the Month: The Boston Terrier
Boston Terriers are compact, muscular dogs with large, bat-like erect ears, short tails and a short, square face. While black and white are the most common colors seen, Boston terriers come in a wide range of colors including brindle, seal, red, brown, all white, and black with white markings. They typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and their average life span is 11-13 years.
Every dog breed is prone to certain health problems. The main ailments that Boston Terriers suffer from are cataracts, luxating patellas, deafness, heart murmurs mast cell tumors, and allergies. Because of their short muzzle they are a brachycephalic breed and cannot tolerate extreme heat or cold. A dog coat and dog boots can help keep these sensitive dogs warm in the winter time but they shouldn't be left outdoors for very long in the heat or cold.
Boston Terriers have a very easy going nature and get along well with children, strangers, and other pets as long as they are properly socialized. They are not difficult to house train and are not usually barkers. They shed very little and require only basic grooming. They are suited well for either and apartment life or active life.
Fun Facts:
1. In many editions of the book version of “The Wizard of Oz”, Toto has been illustrated as a Boston Terrier.
2. Due to the their markings resembling a tuxedo (in addition to their pleasant personality) the breed is commonly called the “American Gentleman” .
3. Boston Terriers were so popular in the US during the 1920’s that they represented between 20-30% of all dogs entered into shows.
4. The Boston Terrier was recognized by the state legislature as the "state dog of Massachusetts" in 1979.
5. Before they took the name Boston Terrier in 1889, these pups were called Round Heads, Bullet Heads,
and Bull Terriers.

St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips for Your Pup
St. Patrick’s Day is upon us! This boisterously merry day is noted for drinking green beer and eating traditional Irish foods, like cabbage and corned beef. These two festive ingredients might be delightful for you but they are both unlucky for your pooch! Alcohol can quickly poison your pet. Be sure to keep alcoholic beverages up and away from your canine friend! Classic St. Patrick’s day food - particularly corned beef – is fully of sodium, which can incite vomiting and diarrhea in your dog. If you want to offer your deserving dog a special St. Paddy’s Day dog treat, choose something dog friendly, like our Shamrock Dog Treats.
If you are throwing an Irish shindig at your home, be sure there is a quiet place away from the ruckus where your pets can relax. Strange people coming and going can make your pup nervous. People under the influence of alcohol can become loud and animated and this can frighten your pets. If you choose to take your dog to a parade or other outdoor festival, be on the lookout for drunk drivers and be sure sure your pooch is on a leash and has a light up or reflective dog collar after dark.
Outfitting our pets out in green for St. Patty’s Day can be a lot of fun. Make sure any clothing or accessories fit properly and don’t hinder movement or breathing. If your pet is just not happy with their outfit, don’t stress them out by forcing them to wear it. If you choose to dye your dog’s fur, only use something specifically formulated for pets, like our Dye Gel for Dogs or our PetPaint Color Spray.
Have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day!

National Poison Prevention Month
March marks the start of National Poison Prevention Month and now is a perfect opportunity to take a look at your home and halt any budding hazards in their tracks. There are numerous typical household items that are injurious, if not lethal, to our prized pets. According to statistics from Poison Control Centers, over 90% of the poisonous substances our pets ingest come from inside our own homes. Here is a list of the top toxic substances our pets unknowingly consume:
1. Human medications – When pills are discarded on the floor, our dogs will discover them and in many cases, eat them. The top medications animals are endangered by to unknowingly are heart medications, antidepressants, and pain medications. If you drop a pill, make sure you recover it right away so that your pooch doesn't confuse it for a treat.
2. Insecticides – We administer these on our animals, in our home, and in our yards. Misuse of these chemicals could induce seizures and skin issues in our pets, especially cats.
3. Pet medication – Most pet medication is flavored with an delicious taste to make it simpler to give our pets. This same alluring taste could prompt them to eat the whole prescription if given the chance.
4. Household items – Paint, drain cleaners, and other cleaning products need to be kept away from pets. Pets' curiosity could steer them to danger if these are eaten!
5. People food – Many seemingly safe snacks such as raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, onions, and garlic can cause severe issues in our pets ranging from stomach ache to fatalities. Be advised of what foods are toxic to dogs and keep those far away from your pup.
6. Chocolate - Chocolate is the number one toxic people food dogs eat. While its toxic to all dogs, it affects each one differently in different amounts. Symptoms can range from vomiting and diarrhea to seizures and in some, death.
7. Plants – There is an extensive list of household plants that are toxic to pets. Be sure to either not keep these plants in your home or to keep them far out of reach of your pets. Even a leaf that has drifted to the floor is oftentime enough to poison your pet.
8. Rat poison – When you put out rat poison, never forget how nosy your pooch is. If they find the poison and ingest it, it can cause internal bleeding, kidney failure, or seizures.
9. Lawn care and garden products - Fertilizers are made of dried blood, manure, and bone meal, making them very appealing to animals. Try to only use pet safe products for your lawn and garden.
10. Automotive products - Gas, oil, and especially antifreeze should be kept out of reach. Less than one tablespoon of antifreeze – which has a sweet taste pets have a hard time resisting – can kill a 20lb dog.
Inspect your home and make sure any of these products are out of reach and put where your pooch cannot get to them. If you suspect your pet has consumed something poisonous, time is of the essence. Steer clear of online forums and don’t waste time doing internet research – The sooner you see your veterinarian the better chance your pet has for a full recovery.
