Fleas: More Than Just An Itch!

Summer activities are enjoyable but can bring unwanted guests - parasites! Fleas are mostly likely the first offenders you think of. These annoying blood suckers are transmitted from outside animals. They hop onto your pup outdoors and then your oblivious dog brings them indoors, where they jump off and spread to carpet, rugs, and bedding. Luckily for humans and pets alike, fleas are easily kept at bay. There are topical solutions, shampoos, chewable tablets, sprays, and even insect repellent dog clothing. If fleas are ignored, a flea infestation can take over your whole house and worse, make your pooch very sick. Here are 3 diseases fleas can plague your precious pup with:

Flea Allergy Dermatitis: Dogs with a flea bite allergy can develop this from just one bite!. Symptoms include excessive scratching, licking, and biting, scabs the dog’s back or neck, and left untreated it can cause painful sores and bacterial skin infections. Dogs who are particularly allergic will chew their skin and fur until the area is bald and raw. Treatment involves flea prevention and meditation to contain scratching and itching.

Tapeworms: If your pooch swallows a flea that has tapeworm eggs, your dog can develop tapeworms. The eggs hatch in your dog’s digestive tract and can mature into an adult tapeworm, growing several feet long. Tapeworms cause weight loss, nutritional deficiency, chronic diarrhea, and fatigue. You can see tapeworms in your dog’s stool. They are small white worms that resemble grains of rice. Your vet can quickly determine if your dog has tapeworms and they are easy to treat.

Flea Bite Anemia: A solitary flea can bite your dog hundreds of times a day, and a flea can ingest up to 15 times its mass in blood. Even a short lived infestation can affect your pooch seriously and they can become anemic from blood loss. Some dogs are more prone, such as small dogs and puppies, as well as sickly and elderly dogs. Treatment includes getting rid of the fleas and in serious cases, blood transfusions.

Keep Your Pet Safe on Summer Road Trips

Summer road trips are a must have for the season and having your fur baby accompany you makes even more fun! Staying safe is top priority though. Leaving your dog loose to walk around your car is a recipe for disaster. They can distract you while driving and can be seriously injured if they are not restrained and you get into an accident. Here at Doggie Vogue we can provide you with all you need to be safe on the road. Regular car seat belts will protect us humans but do nothing for our dogs. Our Ride Right Dog Seat Belt Connector is awesome for keeping your furry friend buckled in. It attaches around the car seat belt and has a secure clip that clips to any harness. For tiny dogs, a booster car seat  can offer safety, comfort, and a view! We have a myriad of dog car seats in various sizes, including console car seats for your smallest car companions. For the ideal car trip accoutrement, the 3-in-1 Stow & Go Car Seat is what you need! It’s a suitcase, a dog bed, and a car seat combined! If your dog is the type to try to climb into the front seat, the Hammock Car Seat Cover for Dogs will keep him in the back where he belongs and offers a comfy sleeping place while shielding your seats from dirt and fur. Even if your pooch stays in place, a car seat cover is still a great idea for keeping your car pristine. Our Classic Car Seat Cover is simple to install and has two seat belt slots for easy car harness use. Keeping your pet in place is a must to keep them from harm, but don’t forget to ensure your dog has a collar with current information on the tags for easy identification if they wander off. A microchip is a great idea as well!

Sweet Potato Dog Treat Chews

Dogs have a natural instinct to chew. Rawhide is can cause blockages and many dog treats being recalled so more and more, making your own treats is the safest choice. These Sweet Potato Dog Treat Chews are an excellent, all natural alternative to rawhide and better yet, they are loaded with nutrients!

What You Need:

1. Large sweet potatoes
2. Mandoline or sharp knife
3. Cutting Board
4. Baking Sheets
5. Parchment paper or aid of your choosing for greasing the pans

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to lowest setting
2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease pans.
3. Cut off one side of the sweet potato lengthwise, as close to the edge as possible. Cutting the side of the potato first allows you to then turn the potato onto this flat surface that you have just created. Having a stable area to rest the potato will make it easier to cut the potato into slices. Don't discard that first piece, it comes out just as yummy as the rest!
4. Cut the rest of the potato into 1/3" slices, no smaller than 1/4".
5. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
6. Bake for 3 hours, turning half way through.
7. Cool completely on a wire rack.

Storing - Although these treats are dried, you will want to keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 4 months.
