Christmas Safety Tips for Your Pet

Have a safe and Happy Christmas!

While we humans love the festivities that Christmas entails, the holidays can be a very stressful time for your pooch – Furniture gets moved around, decorations go up, company comes and goes, and things just look and smell different. There are many potential holiday dangers laying in wait for your curious pooch. Here are just a few:

Christmas Trees- If you use a real tree, always make sure to keep the tree stand covered. The pine sap mixed in the water can poison your dog if he drinks it. Securing the tree to a wall or ceiling hook with fishing line can help keep your tree standing if your pup accidentally jumps on it or knocks it over. The smell of a live tree in the house might cause your pet to want to mark it with urine. Keeping it in an isolated room indoors for a few days will help it to smell more like your home, making it less desirable for marking.

Ornaments- Take care to pick up any tinsel, hooks, or ribbons that fall on the floor. Serious internal injuries could result from the ingestion of these items. If you have a dog or cat plays with the lower ornaments, try only using non-breakable ones on the bottom third.

Food- There are many Christmas treats that are very harmful to your pet. Chocolate, onions, garlic, raisins, and alcohol can all be fatal to dogs! Make sure to keep these deadly items out of your canine companion’s reach. Some holiday human food is fine for your pet, such as cooked turkey with no skin or bones, but the key is to always offer it to them in moderation.

Lights/cords- If you have indoor light decorations, take care to hide the cords out of your dog’s reach. Your pooch could easily get tangled up in the cords and dogs prone to chewing could electrocute themselves if they chew on cords.

Plants – Festive holiday plants can really add the finishing touch to your holiday decorations, but these pretty plants can cause serious stomach issues for your dog. Poinsettias, mistletoe berries, and other Christmas plants should be kept out of pet’s reach.

Christmas is a time for family, fun, decorations, and food. Help keep it ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ by following these precautions to keep your furry friend safe! Merry Christmas for Doggie Vogue!

The Benefits of Dog Boots

With winter on its way, the unavoidable bone chilling temperatures are almost here. Our pups suffer just as much as we do in cold weather, so now is a perfect time to them them for winter as well. While dog coats and jackets will keep warm their bodies, don’t forget about your pooch’s paws! We have dog boots, dog socks, and dog slippers guaranteed to keep your dog from getting frosty paws. Dog boots not only protect from the elements, they also protect your dog’s paws from the salt put down to break down ice and snow. This salt can really hurt your fur baby’s feet! It is very acidic and can burn your dog’s paws, leaving sores behind. Dogs can also get sick if they lick the salt left behind on their paws. Dog boots aren't only useful in the cold months; they can protect your pet’s feet year round. In warmer months, pavement can get very hot and burn your pampered pup’s pads. Chemicals used to treat lawns can irritate paws and can make your dog ill if ingested by licking off of feet. Some older dogs have a difficult time walking on hardwood floors. Dog boots can offer the traction they need to get around safely. A good pair of dog boots is an investment in your pet’s health and well being. Dogs can get cold inside as well outside. Dog socks and slippers are a comfortable alternative to dog boots for indoor use. Disposable rubber dog boots offer a more natural feel than traditional dog boots, and are great for both indoor and outdoor use. These will allow your dog to feel the ground under their feet, which provides them a sense of safety and security. These fit similar to a sock and all full paw movement for the utmost comfort.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips for Your Pet

Thanksgiving brings to mind thoughts of family and feasts. While your pooch might delight in the attention from guests and the delicious food aromas, there are many budding hazards lurking for your pup. It can be hard to deny your furry friend a feast of his own, but many of our favorite holiday dishes can be very dangerous to our dogs.

• The turkey is the center of the Thanksgiving dinner. Boneless, skinless turkey is perfectly healthy for your furry friend in sensible portions, but make sure to remove the skin! Brittle turkey bones can break and splinter, puncturing your dog’s stomach. These should never be given to dogs. Do not feed your dog raw or undercooked turkey because it contains salmonella bacteria and could give your dog food poisoning.

• Sage, a common ingredient in traditional Thanksgiving dishes, has essential oils that could upset your dog’s stomach or cause central nervous system depression if consumed in large amounts.

 • Onions are poisonous to dogs and can cause a dangerous type of anemia that might not be detected for days.

 • If bread dough is eaten by your dog, their body heat could cause the dough to rise inside their stomach. This could cause vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloating.

 • A portion of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie should be fine for a well behaved pooch, but overindulgence could pose serious problems, such as upset stomach, diarrhea, or even worse – pancreatitis. For these reasons, it’s a good idea to limit the goodies to a minimum.

 • Some dogs can’t pass up a taste of beer or alcohol. Make sure you don’t leave drinks unattended. Alcohol can cause your pet to feel disoriented and nauseous and in large quantities, could cause coma or even death.

 • If you’re baking cakes and cookies, keep your pooch’s nose out of the batter. The raw eggs contain salmonella and could give your dog food poisoning

• Food wrappers, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap can cause intestinal blockages if ingested. Take care to keep tempting garbage out of your pet’s reach!

It’s best to keep your dog on their regular diet at all times, but if you can’t help but including your pampered pooch in the festivities, make sure to limit treats to a minimum. Stuffing a Kong toy with turkey, vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy will keep them occupied for hours. If you think your pet has eaten something harmful, call the Animal Poison Control Center Hotline at (888) 426-4435. There is a charge for the call, but it could very well save your pet’s life! Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

What Music Do Dogs Really Prefer?

Have you ever pondered what type of music your pooch enjoys? In a recent four month survey, Lori Kogan, a Colorado State University professor, decided to find the answer to this interesting inquiry. During this study which was printed in a recent issue of the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, she played music selections for 117 dogs residing in an animal shelter including classical, heavy metal, and a psychoacoustic selection sold to calm and relax dogs Each music selection was played for 45 minutes and behavioral observations were marked every 5 minutes. Each music selection was then succeeded by a 15 minute period of silence and this acted as the control group of the experiment.

Out of the selections presented, classical music won by far. Classical music seemed to soothe dogs more than the other options played, even more so than no music at all. The dogs responded to the classical music by sleeping more, which tells us that this type of music has a calming effect on dogs and boosts restful behavior. By contrast, heavy metal seemed to amplify dog’s anxiety and promoted sleeplessness, increased barking, and increased shaking. Surprisingly, the psychoactive music marketed specifically to calm dogs had only a very small calming effect.

While this may seem like an unnecessary study to some, the results could be very beneficial to dogs living in animal shelters. Relaxed, quiet dogs are far more likely to be adopted than nervous, shaking dogs. Playing classical music is a very cost efficient, feasible method to changing a dog’s environment and to decreasing stressful factors. Kogan plans to do follow up studies exploring the potential for music as a means to soothe animals in veterinary clinics and for surgery recovery.

Tips for Boarding Your Dog

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and while we adore bringing our canine companions with us on our travels, sometimes it’s just not feasible. If you are traveling out of town this Thanksgiving and plan on leaving your fur baby behind, now is the time to start making arrangements for your dog’s ‘vacation’ as well. If you’re not fortunate enough to have family or friends who can dog sit your furry friend, you may have to consider boarding your pet. If this is your first time boarding, this decision may be a stressful one to make. The thought of leaving your canine companion can be very difficult to consider, but with a little planning and research, you can be sure to choose a place that is a good match for your pup. Here are some tips on choosing the best boarding facility, to make your experience as simple as possible:

• Remember that the choicest boarding facilities fill up quick at holiday time. Make reservations far ahead of time to ensure there’s room for your pup. Ask your friends, vet, and groomer who they recommend and research reviews online to assist you in picking the right place.

• Taking a tour of the kennel is vital. Not only will it give you a better idea of how the place is run and if it’s the one for you, it will also comfort you to know exactly what to expect for your pooch. You’ll want to inspect all areas including sleeping, exercise, and feeding areas. Make sure these areas are clean and odor free. While it will most likely smell like ‘dog’, it shouldn't smell like a dirty dog!

• Your dog will need to be up to date on all of his vaccines before boarding. This is a requirement for every boarding facility. You will need to provide the facility with your dog’s medical records and make sure you inform them of any allergies or health problems your dog has.

• Being away from home and a normal routine is stressful for your pooch. It’s a good idea to take your dog’s own food to avoid further stomach upset. Taking a dog bed, dog toys, or dog treats might help your pup to feel at home as well but don’t take anything irreplaceable – sometimes things get lost or destroyed by your pet while boarding.

• When you drop your pet off, don’t make an emotional ‘farewell’ scene. Your dog will pick up on your emotions and it well set the mood for his stay. Remain upbeat and happy, even if you’re not!

• Make sure the boarding facility has all of your contact information, as well as your vet’s info and local emergency contacts in case you cannot be reached.

• If you feel uncomfortable about any aspect of a facility, do not use them. Always go with your gut instinct.

If you can’t find a place up to your standards, all of the better kennels are full, or if your pooch won’t do well with boarding, you could always consider hiring a pet sitter to come into your home. This might be more expensive but peace of mind involving your pup’s well being is always priceless!

Halloween Safety for Your Pets

Halloween can be a ghoulishly good time for the whole family, including the family pet! However, there are many incipient hazards that can harm your dog and end the holiday fun. With a little foresight and preventative planning, you can guarantee that your furry friend remains safe and has a spooktacular Halloween. Here are a some ways you can protect your pet this Halloween:

Candy: Candy might be at the top of your mind when thinking about Halloween. Be sure to hide your treats out of your canine companion’s reach; While tasty to humans, candy can be very dangerous for dogs. Many of us are aware that chocolate is toxic to dog and cats, but candy that contains the sweetener xylitol is poisonous as well. Candy wrappers can be just as harmful as the candy themselves. Foil and cellophane wrappers can cause bowel obstructions that could require surgery to fix. Lollipop sticks, if swallowed, could rupture your dog’s intestines and cause a life threatening emergency. Keep some dog treats handy to quell your pup’s craving for tasty holiday treats.

Decorations: A bit part of Halloween fun are the festive decorations. Keep your dog safe by hiding wires and cords for electrical lights out of his view. These could cause burns or cuts if chewed or even electrocution! Pumpkins and decorative corn really set the mood. These delightful natural decorations are basically nontoxic, but if your dog eats these it could cause an upset stomach. Jack-o-lanterns are the embodiment of the Halloween spirit, but make sure to be careful if you choose to add a candle. Excited pups could knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire!

Costumes: If you choose to dress your dog up in a dog costume, make sure that he’s happy and comfortable. Your pup’s costume should not hinder his movement or hearing. Make sure that he has no trouble breathing. It’s better to try on dog costumes a while before the big night to ensure that it will not make your dog anxious and also that he is not allergic to the costume. Pick a costume doesn't have any small pieces that dangle or that could get chewed off, as your pooch could choke on them.

Front Door Safety: Even the most social and friendly pets can get stressed out by the frequent doorbell ringing of trick-or-treaters. Keeping them in a separate room, away from the front door is a great way to alleviate any potential stress. Having so many visitors at once is stressful to dogs, especially when they are decked out in unfamiliar costumes. Set your pet up in a room far away from the door and give them something to avert their attention, like a bone or a kong treat full of peanut butter. This will not only alleviate their anxiety, but will also make it less likely for your pet to escape out of the front door. Keeping proper identification on your dog is a good idea at all times, but especially so when their window for escaping and getting lost is higher.

Outdoor Pets: Halloween night is not always full of lighthearted fun. Some people are cruel and use Halloween as a time to hurt animals. If at all possible, keep outdoor animals indoors or supervised to prevent them from being hurt. Black cats are the most targeted pets during Halloween but any pet is at risk and should be kept indoors, where they are safe. Your dog can be part of the Halloween fun, if you play it safe. With a little safety and precaution you can ensure your entire family has a ghoulishly good time this Halloween season! Have fun, be safe, and have a Happy Halloween!

Howl-o-ween Hounds: How to Get Your Dog To Wear a Costume

Halloween almost here and now is the time to start plotting this year’s festivities! This holiday can be an enjoyable occasion not only for you, but for your four legged friend as well. A dog costume can be a fun way to get your pup in the Halloween spirit but if your fur baby is a puppy or is new to the idea of wearing clothing, a costume could cause discomfort and distress if not properly introduced. One of the key things to remember when choosing a costume for your canine is to ensure that it will fit correctly. Ill fitting costumes aren’t only uncomfortable; they could also be dangerous! A costume that is too small will cause discomfort and could cut off circulation; a costume that is too big could get caught on objects or cause your dog to trip while walking. The best way to ensure a good fit for the costume you pick out is to take your dog’s measurements and then compare them to the sizing chart for the costume.

Once you’ve chosen a costume, you can begin introducing it to your dog. The amount of time this takes varies dog by dog, so it’s best to start a few weeks before Halloween. Star by placing the costume on the floor where your dog can check it out. When you see your dog sniffing it, praise him and give him dog treats. Do this periodically for a day. Once he’s begun to associate the costume with acquiring treats, advance by laying part of the costume over his back for 10 seconds at a time and shower him with praise and treats each time. Do frequently over the course of a couple of days, slowly increasing the amount of time it’s left on his back. Once your canine companion is accepting of the idea of the costume touching him with no fuss, go ahead and dress him in it for a short time, reassuring him with treats and praise. Only leave it on for a minute and then remove it. Do this every couple hours, leaving it on for a slightly longer every time. Persuade your pooch to walk on a leash with the costume on if you plan to take him trick or treating. This will assure him that his new costume will not hinder his movement. Enlisting a friend to assist you is a good idea. Have your friend give your pup treats when he’s wearing his costume, so that he’ll affiliate strangers with food and praise. If you’re planning on dressing up too, you’ll need to acquaint your dog with it as well, using a similar approach. Dogs not only establish friendly people by scent and their voice, but also by appearance and the way they walk. Your pup might not recognize you in your costume at first. Let your dog sniff your costume and get accustomed to it before you try it on. Put it on a couple different times and talk to your furry friend and offer him treats so that he also associates your costume with positive reactions.

Some dogs, despite how patient you are and how cautiously you proceed, just simply will not tolerate a costume. If your dog shows signs of distress or discomfort, please do not force them to wear a costume anyway. This could be very traumatic for your pup. There are other options to get your dog into the Halloween spirit other than costumes alone. A Halloween dog bandana or matching collar, leash and harness are great low stress choices, since they are items that he is already used to. If your canine is fine with dog shirts and tanks but refuses a more cumbersome costume, a Halloween themed dog tee could be the answer. No matter what Halloween finery your pooch dons, stay safe and have a spooktacular Halloween!

How to Relieve You Pup’s Itchy Skin

Get rid of itchy skin!

Does your pooch have itchy skin? Incessant itching and scratching can make your dog – and you- crazy! Sporadic itching is common but dogs licking, scratching, biting, and chewing to the extent that they are injuring themselves is a symptom of a more serious underlying issue. If your dog is frequently scratching, it is critical to find out the reason causing this behavior, as this is very irritating for your furry friend! There are numerous things that can cause itchy skin in our canine companions such as dry skin, allergies, parasites, and infection. Observing your dog and both his surroundings and behavior can help you to conclude what the source of his discomfort is.

Dry skin is fairly simple to spot. If you see flakes of dandruff when you part your dog’s fur, he has dry skin. This can be brought on by many different factors. Your surroundings can affect your dog’s skin. If you reside in a location with low humidity, your pet may be more inclined to have dry skin as a result of a lack of moisture in the air. Your dog’s food can also deplete the moisture from his skin. Commercial pet food production processes out the good oils that promote healthy skin. Dry pet food also has a dehydrating affect on skin and fur. If you think this might be the reason behind your dog’s itching, adding digestive enzymes to your dog’s meals could be very helpful. Enzymes will help enhance the release of nutrients and beneficial probiotic bacteria. A healthy digestive system will absorb fluid more easily from the food eaten, and this improves hydration and increases the moisture level of the skin and fur. There are also supplements created specifically for dog’s skin and fur that can promote healthy skin and help relieve itch and dryness.

Another frequent source of itchy skin is allergies. Dogs can be allergic to numerous things but the most common are airborne allergies and food allergies. Airborne allergies are caused by pollen, dust, mildew, insects, or animal/human dander. Dogs have symptoms of hay fever like we do; airborne allergies present themselves in the form of itchy skin. The skin normally has a layer of bacteria present. When dogs scratch, this bacterium is pushed further into skin layers and can cause infection along with great irritation. Food allergies in dogs manifest themselves much differently than they do in humans. Instead of the symptoms we humans experience, their allergy symptoms are again, itchy skin, scratching, licking, and chewing. The most frequent foods dogs are allergic to are chicken, beef, and grains. To discover if one of these ingredients is what is causing your dog’s irritation, you’ll need to perform an elimination diet. To do this, pick a pet food that contains none of these ingredients and give it to your dog for around 2 months. If the symptoms cease, you know that one of these ingredients is the cause.

No matter what is making your pup itch, finding relief for your pet is essential. Bathing is key to maintaining healthy skin. Routine baths with a medicated or oatmeal dog shampoo can calm your canine’s irritated skin. Using cool water is helpful as it will not exacerbate the itch, unlike warm or hot water. This is not a cure but will definitely provide temporary relief. Make sure to pat your dog dry after the bath and avoid rubbing, which would worsen itching. Benedry is safe for dogs and can also provide short term relief from itching. Your veterinarian can advise the proper dosage and let you know if this would be a good option for your dog.

Dog Fashion: A Brief History

Last week a batch of photographs cataloged at the Library of Congress was released to the public. This collection features bulldogs dressed as people in attire that was very popular in the time frame they were taken. The intriguing thing about these photographs is that they were taken around 1905, when cameras were only affordable for the wealthy and creative photography was very scarce. The first cameras were very different from modern cameras; you had to remain frozen in one position for a number of minutes before the picture was taken. This is  very different from modern cameras where you can take numerous pictures instantly. One would wonder how the photographer got the dogs to remain completely still for so long, with a pipe in their mouth no less!
After seeing these photos that are more than a century old, you may ponder just how far back dog fashion is embedded in history and the answer might shock you! Dog clothing is not a new manifestation; its background reaches back all the way to 520 A.D! When King Arthur ruled over Great Britain, dogs were employed in the military and law enforcement and donned protective clothing to keep them shielded from injury, cold temperatures and dampness. Dog collars date back even longer, at least to 3100 B.C. Ancient Egyptians embellished their canines in collars that were fashioned out of leather with copper, bronze, and gold adornments. These were not operative collars for guidance or identification, they were proclamations of wealth. Detailed artwork illustrates the Royal courts of Europe with dogs clad in bejeweled dog collars and dog coats. Princess Victoria corresponded in 1833 of donning her spoiled pup in a jacket and pants. At that time, in 19th century Paris, you could readily find dog specialty shops catering to pet fashion for the well to do. Popular writers transcribed in detail articles pertaining to dog fashion and what ensembles were proper for particular occasions.
While the canine fashion industry has witnessed an enormous growth spurt in the past decade, dog fashion itself has existed for thousands of years. Where it used to be limited strictly to royalty and the wealthy using only the finest textiles and valuable gems, recent technology and innovations have encouraged mass production and affordable materials. This has allowed dog clothing to be readily available for the middle class consumer. Though a lot of clothing is used for operative reasons - protection, warmth and dryness, and medical reasons- designer dog clothing is in huge demand and options are limitless. Dog fashion is a flourishing industry and is here to stay!

What’s in a Name? How to Pick the Perfect Name for Your Pooch

What's in a name?

Part of the fun of bringing home a new dog is choosing a name. The name you pick is important… It says as much about you as it does your pet! You want to pick a name that not only fits your dog, but sounds pleasing, too. Your latest addition will become a unique and important member of your family and you will speak his new moniker over 30,000 times in his lifetime, so you want to take care to choose wisely! Your name choice could originate from many different things. You could base the name on something apparent like a physical trait, such as color. You could use a name based on the country of origin for his breed, such as a  Russian name for a husky or a Chinese name for a Shar Pei. You could use the name of someone fictional or a celebrity. Your options are unlimited! Some important things to take into consideration:

• Dog names should not be more than one or two syllables, with two syllables being the more ideal option. The majority of dog commands are one syllable. “Shake”, “Lay”, “Come”, etc. If the dog’s name is two syllables, he can easily make a distinction between his name and the command.

• Dogs identify hard/stop consonants more easily. The prominent stop consonants are b, p, t, d, k, and g. You can capture your dog’s attention more quickly if you use a name that begins with a stop consonant. Dogs also react well to names that end in “y” or “ie”.

• Try to pick a name that is unique and doesn't sound similar to other pet’s names, in addition to those of family members, close relatives and friends. Also choose a name that does not sound like a command you give. This will aid in avoiding confusion for your pooch. If he often hears a similar sounding name or word and mistakes it for his own name but is then ignored afterwards, he will ultimately quit responding to his name.

 • It’s best to only use your dog’s name in a positive tone so that he affiliates his name with treats and good experiences. If you use your pet’s name while punishing him, he could begin to think that his name is bad and therefore run away or refuse to come to you when he hears it.

 • If you are adopting a dog, giving them a different name can be a great idea. They could have bad experiences associated with their previous name, especially if they were mistreated in the past. They may affiliate their former name with abuse and fear. Providing them with a new name can be very therapeutic. You also have no way of knowing if the name the shelter gives you is their ‘real’ name; it could just be a name the shelter provided him with! Dogs do not view their names as characterizing their identities, as people do. It is fairly simple to teach your pup their new name with a little training and effort on your part and as long as you are saying their name with love, they are satisfied.

Dogs: Baby’s Best Friend?

Dogs: Baby's Best Friend?

We all know that dogs are man’s best friend but a recent study published this week online and next month in Pediatric medical journal found that your furry friend could be baby’s best friend, too! This study, conducted in Finland on nearly 400 babies, discovered that babies who live with dogs and cats during the first year of their life could be healthier and suffer less ear infections and respiratory infections, like as the common cold. Dog exposure showed the most prominent results, but cats offered some protection as well. "The children having dogs at home were healthier, they had less ear infections and they needed less antibiotics," said Eija Bergroth, the study's lead author and a pediatrician who worked at Kuopio University Hospital, in Finland, at the time of the study.
This study was conducted by having parents complete weekly diaries with full disclosure on their child’s health and detailing the exposure they had with dogs and cats. The study started in the mother’s 3rd trimester and ran until the baby’s first birthday. One set of findings showed those children with dogs registered as being healthy for 73% of the time, compared to 65% of children with no pets or exposure to pets in their home. Overall, babies with cats or dogs are about 30% less likely to have respiratory infection symptoms, such as coughing, breathing problems, runny nose, and fever. They are also 44% less likely to develop ear infections and 29% less likely to require antibiotics.
The reasoning behind these results is that the dirt and germs a dog carries into the home may cause the baby’s immune system to mature more rapidly, which makes it more efficient against fighting off the viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory problems and help keep the child from developing asthma and allergies. The results back up the theory that keeping an infant’s environment overly sanitized is counterproductive to their health. While this is excellent news for homes who own dog and cats, it’s not great news for all – Asthmatic children shouldn’t be in homes with dogs or cats because the dander can negatively affect their condition. The conclusion is that while you shouldn’t purchase a dog expressly to protect your baby from sickness, you don’t need to stress about rehoming your dog or cat based on the fear that they will hurt your newborn.

These flotation devices have dual layers of flotation material and quick grab handles on the back, for emergency rescue.

Protect Your Pets: Summer Parasites and the Dangers They Impose

Summer’s hotter temperatures and sunshiny days bring loads opportunities for both you and your pets to have fun outdoors. But with the warmer days comes an influx of pesky parasites that are more than just annoying – They can seriously hurt your pet, even to a deadly level! With the rather tepid winter we had nationwide, parasites are going to be even more profuse this year but, thanks to modern veterinary science, there is much we can do to keep our furry friends safe from these unwelcome guests.

Fleas are most likely the first summer parasites that come to mind. These insects spread from other outdoor animals, such as neighbors’ pets, feral cats, opossums, and raccoons. These animals continually re-infest yards. Fleas living outdoors climb onto your pet, feed on their blood, and lay their eggs. These eggs will drop off and invade your carpet, rugs, and bedding. Symptoms of flea infestation include itching, scratching, hair loss, and scabby skin. If you part your pet’s fur, you will see the actual fleas and “flea dirt”, black or brown specs that are flea feces. Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva. This allergic reaction can cause hair loss, dermatitis, and infection. A flea infected with tapeworms can give them to your dog if he swallows a flea while scratching himself with his teeth. Fleas are both easy to avoid and get rid of. There are numerous topical solutions, collars, shampoos, and chewable tablets to fight fleas that vary in effectiveness. Your vet can help you pick out the right preventative for your dog.

Mosquitoes are one of the most bothersome parasites out there. These blood sucking insects’ bites leave red bumps that itch for days! They also carry the awful West Nile Virus, of which there is no protection from. The best course of action in avoiding the West Nile is to keep yourself and your pet inside at sunset and around early evening hours when disease ridden mosquitoes are hunting for blood. Mosquitoes also pass on heartworms, which can be deadly. These are long, threadlike worms that cause heart and circulatory problems with dogs. Prevention of this parasite is important to summer time survival and fortunately, very simple. There are variety monthly products your vet can prescribe to fight off these pests. Ticks thrive in trees, long grass, and shrubbery. These parasites grab onto your dogs’ fur and then latch onto their skin, feeding on their blood. On top of blood loss and anemia, they can also give your dog Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that can cause lameness, painful joint inflammation, and loss of appetite. This can also be spread to humans from pets.

Ticks are easy to see. If you’ve taken your pet into wooded or grassy areas, visually check your dog once arriving home. If you discover a tick, grab onto its head and pull it directly out of your dog’s skin. Once you remove it, put antibiotic ointment on the area. Many flea preventatives also include tick prevention as well, which makes them a very convenient way to combat these summer parasites.
Roundworms and hookworms are intestinal parasites your pet can get when coming in contact with feces contaminated soil. These pests can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and anemia and can be given to humans. Multiple doses of medication may be necessary if your pet is infested with worms, but they are pretty easy to get rid of once diagnosed. Make sure to wash your hands and your dog’s paws if you come in contact with contaminated soil to avoid these worms.

Parasites are very unpleasant and can wreck your summer fun. The warmer months of spring, summer, and early fall are the worst time for these pests because this is when their hosts – you and your dogs – are most accessible but, with preventative methods and a watchful eye, you can keep both you and your four legged friends from suffering through a lot of pain and discomfort. Have a preventative plan in place with your vet in advance and if you notice your pet displaying any unusual behavior make sure to take them in for a screening.

Trend Alert: Brightly Colored Hues For Your Furry Fashionista!

One of the hottest trends taking on the fashion world this year is bright hues for your hair – Streaks, bright dyes, pastel washes, dip dyes, oh my! Celebrities such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Avril Lavine, Juliette Lewis, and Jordan Sparks have been spotted on the red carpet with bold dye jobs. This fun trend doesn’t have to be restricted to just humans – Let your dog enjoy the fun with our totally non-toxic and odor-free semi-permanent hair dye gel for dogs. These vegetable based dyes are specifically made for dogs and will not hurt them in any way. The gel formula is easier to work with than similar liquid formulas and leaves less room for a mess. This dye comes in 15 great colors and usually lasts 4 to 6 washes, but varies according to the type of dog and coat it is used on. Independence Day is almost here and our Wicked Red and Midnight Blue are great choices for your patriotic pooch to show their pride!

Our dye gels for dogs work best on coats of a lighter color – The lighter your dog’s coat, the brighter and more intense the outcome will be. Prior to coloring your dog’s fur, you’ll want to remove and mats or tangles by brushing out the coat. As with any other product, test the dye on a small patch of fur before proceeding, to make sure that your dog will not have an allergic reaction. Wash your pet with shampoo and rinse the fur thoroughly, then apply the dye to wet fur. Leave on for 15 minutes. Make sure to stay away from areas too close to the eyes – You don’t want to chance getting the dye in them. If the color is not bright enough, leave the dye on for a longer period of time for more intense results. Rinse the dye completely out of the fur, until the water runs clear and then dry your dog’s coat. You can use a hair dryer on the lowest setting to set the color. Make sure you wear gloves to prevent stains on your skin! FYI: For even more fun, we have Stencils for Dog Hair Dye! Add hip designs to your dye job with one of our 8 stencil options. Our Dog Hair Styling Gel is great for spiking your punky pup's mohawk! If you need a little assistance, our Dog Hair Dye Accessory Kit has clips, combs, brushes to apply the dye... Everything you'd need to make your dye job easy as pie!

Getting Off On The Right Paw - How To Prepare For A New Puppy

Adding a furry new addition to your family is so exciting! With a new puppy comes many hopes and dreams… With a little pre-planning and getting ready, you have a great chance of having those come true! The first few days can be a little shocking for your puppy – He’ll be in a new place and away from his mother and litter mates for the first time, with new people and different obstacles. In order to make the change in environment smoother, it helps to get your family prepared and your house puppy ready ahead of time.

Your new puppy isn't the only one who will go through changes – a new baby, even of the furry variety- means much responsibility. Make a schedule for bathroom breaks and feedings and divide the responsibilities among the family. Make a list of supplies you’ll need – food, bowls, toys, grooming supplies, bedding, a dog collar and leash, and a crate are just a few of the must-haves for a new pup. You’ll need to puppy proof your home by eliminating things that could hurt your puppy at his level, such as rugs, tablecloths, plants and things that break, such as glass. Secure electrical cords down with tape or cover them so that they are protected from chewing. Store harmful chemicals up high, and remove any stray articles such as shoes or knick knacks your puppy might be tempted to chew on. Pick a space just for your puppy – A nice quiet spot for him to relax with a comfortable dog bed to sleep in. Puppies need a great deal of rest and time outs from playtime! Set up his dog crate in this spot. You might want to also invest in baby gates… You won’t want to give your new puppy freedom to roam the whole house right away. This could confuse and scare him, and could be a setback with his house breaking. Scheduling a vet visit within the first 24 hours is a great idea - You want to make sure that your puppy doesn’t have any congenital disorders or heath issues, and you’ll also need to set up his vaccination schedule.

When the day comes for you to go get your puppy, you’ll want to inquire about his feeding schedule and copy it once you come home. If you want to change his food and feeding schedule, you should do this. Puppies have sensitive stomachs and drastic changes will upset them. On the way home, the puppy should ride in the back seat either in someone’s arms or in a crate or carrier. When you get to your house, you should take your puppy to the area of your yard that will be his potty area before going inside. This will begin set house breaking in motion right away. From here on, you’ll keep up your pre-made schedule for feeding, naps, time outs and playtime. While your new fur baby will need lots of cuddles, love, and attention, he’ll need time spent in quiet and solitude as well, so that he can get the rest he needs. A dog crate is perfect for this purpose, though your puppy might disagree at first. It’s very likely he will show his dislike by whining and crying, but don’t give in! By comforting him when he commits bad behavior, you telling him that his actions are okay and that they will get him what he wants! Rewarding your dog and lavishing him with attention for good behaviors will affirm that these actions are what you want from him and what make you happy. By starting off correctly, you will end up with a happy and healthy puppy!
