Classic Thumbprint Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

All dogs love peanut butter! These tasty treats are not only simple to make - They look like high end gourmet dog cookies. These delicious dog treats are perfect for your pampered pup and also make great gifts!

Ingredients:

• 2 cups whole wheat flour
• 1/2 cup rolled oats
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
• 1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth
• 1/2 cup water
• 1/2 cup strawberry jam

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 325° F

2. Whisk together the flour, oats and cinnamon.

3. Place the peanut butter, chicken broth and water in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 15 seconds. Stir together the warm peanut butter and liquids. If needed, microwave again for 10 to 15 seconds. Stir again until all of the liquid is incorporated into the peanut butter.

4. Make a well in the dry ingredients.

5. Pour the peanut butter mixture into the dry ingredients and stir, using a fork, until a dough forms.

6. Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.

7. Using a tablespoon sized cookie scooper, scoop out rounded balls onto the prepared baking sheet.

8. Create an indentation, and flatten each cookie.

9. Bake for 15 minutes. Leave the peanut butter dog treats in the oven, once it's turned off, to cool.

10. Once the dog treats are completely cooled, place the jam in a microwave safe container.

11. Microwave for 10 seconds. Then stir the jam. If needed, microwave for another 10 seconds and stir. You want a smooth liquid consistency.

12. Using a 1/2 teaspoon, gently spoon the jam into each cookies indentation.

13. Let the jam cool completely before moving the dog treats.

Storing - These peanut butter dog treats are delicate with the addition of the jam. First, they need to be stored in a single layer as the jam does not harden completely. Once in a air tight container, like a freezer bag, they can be kept in the refrigerator for one week. Store them in the freezer for up to four months. These gourmet dog treats will keep fresh longer without the jam middle. You can bake the cookies, not adding the jam, and keep them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks and in the freezer for up to 6 months. Then before you serve, follow the last four steps of this recipe.

Yield - Using a tablespoon sized cookie scooper, this recipe will make 30 dog cookies.

The Importance of Yearly Check Ups for Your Pup

“My dog is healthy - He doesn't need to see a vet.”

I’m certain a lot of dog owners have that thought go through their minds when they receive their annual postcard reminder from their vet. While your pet might appear to be in good health, he could be showing warning signs and underlying symptoms your vet would  pick up in an exam and could then correct or slow the progress of. An annual exam consists of more than just vaccinations – Your vet inspects your pup’s whole body from nose to tail. Here is what you can expect during a yearly exam and why each is imperative:

Nose, Eyes, Mouth, and Ears - Your vet will inspect your pooch’s nose for nasal discharge. He is checking for more than a cold – a runny nose is a sign of many different ailments. He'll check your dog's eyes for infection, discharge and debris. Dull eyes are a can be a symptom of parasites, stress, and many more threatening ailments. He’ll inspect your dog’s teeth and gums for plaque, disease, abscesses, and tumors. As dogs age, tartar builds up on their teeth, similar to humans, and ultimately your pet will need a cleaning. Your vet will decide if this is a necessity. Your dog's ears should be clean and clear of any odors. Foul odor is a sympton of infection and mites.

Lungs, Heart, Coat, and Abdomen - Using a stethoscope, your vet will  inspect your pup’s lungs for irregular breathing patterns, congestion, or cough. He'll listen to your dog's heart for abnormal beating. Your vet will check your dog’s skin for parasites, in addition to cuts, swelling, scrapes, lumps, and condition of the coat. A dull coat is a sign of illness. By feeling your dog’s stomach and groin area, your vet can evaluate your dog’s organs and check for signs of pain or discomfort which is a sign of illness. He’ll also check your pup’s lymph nodes for swelling.

Back, Tail, Hips, Legs, and Paws - Your vet will feel your dog’s back and tail to check for spinal issues. The hips and legs will be checked for pain, joint swelling, and stiffness that are caused by arthritis, muscle damage, and other diseases. Finally, the paws and nails will be examined for infection or cuts. There are many optional tests and vaccinations our vets offer and it can be confusing as to whether they are necessary for our pets. Here is a brief explanation of each, so that you can decide if they are right for your pet:

Fecal Exam: During this exam the vet will examine a fecal sample from your pet to check for intestinal parasites. These parasites are not only harmful to your pet – Many are transmittable to humans, particularly small children.

Rabies Vaccination: This vaccination is required by law in the U.S as either a 1 year or 3 year vaccination, depending on your state’s legislation. Rabies is 100% fatal in dogs and there is no treatment available.

Distemper/Parvovirus/Adenovirus: This vaccination protects against all three of these life threatening diseases that any dog could come in contact with. Along with the rabies vaccine, it is considered a core vaccination and shouldn’t be skipped. It should be given every 3 years or more.

Bordetella: This vaccine is recommended for dogs in high-risk environments and is required for dogs who participate in dogs shows, are boarded, or before surgery. Kennel cough is not usually serious but can be dangerous to young puppies and is highly contagious. It is given annually for most dogs but for high risk dogs 6 month boosters are available.

Lyme Disease: This vaccination is generally only recommended for dogs that have a high risk of being exposed to Lyme disease carrying ticks. This vaccine is administered annually. You can find out if you are in a high risk area here.

Leptospirosis: This vaccination is generally restricted to established risk areas. Your pet is usually exposed to leptospirosis in areas of standing water and areas with rodents. This vaccination is administered yearly.

Canine Influenza: This vaccination is similar to the bordetella vaccination and is recommended for the same reasons. It is also administered yearly.

Heartworm Test and Parasite Prevention: Parasites are very harmful to your pets and in addition to making them miserable, some parasites are even deadly. Your pup’s annual exam is a great time to stock up on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Your vet will need to do a heartworm test annually to ensure that your dog is free of heartworms. There are many different forms of flea, tick, and heartworm prevention and your vet will help you pick out what is best for your pup.

Don’t let financial troubles keep you from taking your pup in to get the care he needs. There are many organizations that offer low cost vet care, including vaccinations. Many are mobile vets that offer high quality care with no exam fees. A little research online could save you a lot of cash while still ensuring your pet is healthy!

Dog Breed of The Month: The Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu, who originated in China, is an ancient breed that was created all the way back in 800 BC. These adorable pups were initially bred to be accessories, their job was to sit in the emperor’s palace and to sound the alarm when someone approached. They are believed to be a mix of Pekingese and Lhasa Apso. DNA evidence establishes the Shih Tzu as one of the eldest breeds. The first Shih Tzus were transported into Europe in 1930s and distributed throughout the country, eventually coming to the U.S. during World War II. They were recognized by the AKC in 1969, categorized as a toy breed and are now recognized by all of the major kennel clubs in the English speaking world.

Shih Tzu are compact, hardy dogs with a round, large heads, big dark eyes, and a long body. Their muzzles are very short, brachycephalic breed, and they possess an under bite, a component of their breed standard. They typically are about 11 inches tall and weigh 10-16 lbs. They have a long, silky double coat that needs frequent brushing, maintenance, and grooming, which could be costly and should be kept in mind while considering this breed for ownership. Their long tail curls over their back and their fur comes in various color combinations.

This breed is inclined to numerous ailments including many different breathing problems, invertibral disk disease, hypothyroidism, ear infections, premature tooth loss, and cherry eye. They can become obese very quickly and their food intake should be monitored. In spite of their health problems, these sturdy pups typically live extended lives of about 15 years or more. Because they are a brachycephalic breed, they are very delicate in extreme heat and cold and should be kept indoors during inclement weather. They are not able to regulate their body temperature and can become very cold in the winter. Depending on their home climate, they might need a dog coat, dog boots, and dog sweaters in order to stay warm in the colder months.

Shih Tzu are very bright dogs, full of personality. They are typically cheerful and fun loving. These gentle dogs are friendly and usually interact well with other dogs and children, though they will probably prefer older children. They can be stubborn and house breaking can be hard, so training and proper socialization from a young age are a must. These people oriented dogs are superb companions and are extremely attached to their masters. This dog is perfect for apartment life and needs only minimal exercise.

Fun Facts

1. The complete name of this dog breed is Tibetan Shih Tzu Kou which literally translates as Tibetan Lion Dog. They are also occasionally dubbed the Chrysanthemum Dog, a name given in England, due to fact that the dog’s hair grows out up ward from it's nose, making it's face look like the flower.

2. The Shih Tzu is one of the 14 ancient breeds of dog according to DNA studies. These studies show that they are the nearest known descendant of Senji, the prehistoric Chinese wolf.

3. Famous celebrity Shih Tzu owner sare  Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Jean Harlow, Jane Seymour, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Betty White, Bill Gates, Nicole Richie, Beyonce, Anna Nicole Smith, Queen Elizabeth, and Brooke Shields

4. Old Tibetan monks regarded this dog as holy because it kept guard over the Imperial Palace in olden days.

5. The name Shih Tzu is both singular and plural.

Five Fun Dog Facts

We humans interpret our world by sight but our furry friends predominantly use their incredible sense of smell. Here are some fun facts about your dog’s fascinating snout:

1. While a dog's brain is only one-tenth the size of a human brain, the part that controls smell is 40 times larger than in humans.

2. A dog’s sense of smell is about 1 thousand to 10 million times more sensitive than a human (depending on the breed).

3. The mucus on a dog's nose actually helps them smell by capturing scent particles. When a dog’s nose is dry, they may lick it to aid them in scent.

4. When a dog smells something they are not just registering a smell, they get an entire story. They can smell pheromone which is not only found in the urine and fecal, but on the skin and fur. From this they can tell a lot about another dog or human including if they are male or female, what they ate, where they have been, what they have touched, if they are ready to mate, if they have recently given birth, or had a false pregnancy and what mood they are in. They have even been known to smell cancer on people, alerting them to it and saving their lives. This means when your dog smells another person, tree that another dog has peed on, pant leg that another dog has rubbed up against, or a chair that someone has sat in, they are actually reading a story, not just smelling an interesting scent.

5. A dog can sniff and breathe at the same time. These are two different functions. Breathing is for air, but when they sniff.

Fourth of July Safety Tips

For most Americans, the Fourth of July is a celebratory occasion. Firework shows, cook outs, boating, camping… All spectacular ways to kick back and salute the birth of our nation. Since many people acknowledge their pets being family members, it could seem fun to include them in the festivities. While this might seem like a good idea, it could conceivably have a  bad outcome for your pooch. July 5th is marked as animal shelters’ busiest day, due to panicked pets fleeing from the noise of firecrackers. Vets are busy also, with injuries, poisonings, and upset stomachs. Here are 10 tips garnered from the ASPCA for keeping your furry friend protected and happy this Fourth of July:

1. Keep pets indoors: Even if your dog is accustomed to being outside, it could become frightened and flee from fireworks and other loud party ruckus. In their attempt to find a safe and quiet space, they could become lost, run over, or injured.

2. Do not use insect repellent or sunscreen that isn't specifically made for pets: Just because it isn't poisonous to humans doesn't make it dog friendly! Toxics side effects of sunscreen are drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and excessive thirst. DEET is a common insecticide and can cause neurological damage to your pets.

3. Alcohol is poisonous to dogs: Keep alcoholic drinks out of reach! Even a small amount of alcohol can cause your pup to become dangerously intoxicated. This could cause them to go into a coma or die of respiratory failure. Even beer is off limits; fermented hops and ethanol are poisonous to both dogs and cats.

4. If you are attending a fireworks display, leave your dog at home: A crowd of people watching a display of beautiful lights sounds like fun to humans but is not at all a good time for your dog. The combination of loud noises and too many people will freak your fur baby out.

5. Proper identification is a must: If your pet does manage to escape, proper ID goes a long way to getting them back to you. ID tags with their name and your up to date information are a must. Microchipping your pet is a great idea as well, since collars can slip off and get lost.

6. Say ‘No’ to glow jewelry: Dressing your furry friend in festive attire can be fun, if your pet allows it but refrain from adorning them with glow jewelry. They liquid is not toxic, but if your dog chews up the jewelry, it can cause gastrointestinal irritations and the plastic could cause an intestinal blockage from swallowed pieces of plastic.

7. Keep your pet out of the way of fireworks: Curious pets could be seriously damaged from fireworks. Their paws and face could be burned and serious damage could be done to their insides if a lit firework is swallowed. Even unlit fireworks pose a danger – Some contain potentially toxic substances like arsenic and potassium nitrate.

8. Stick to your dog’s normal diet: It can be tempting to indulge your dog in delicious holiday food but this could seriously upset their stomachs. Even if you avoid known toxic ingredients, just changing your pup’s diet for one day could cause severe indigestion and diarrhea.

9. Lighter fluid and matches are harmful to pets: Matches contain chlorate and if ingested, it could cause labored breathing, blood cell damage, and kidney disease. Lighter fluid can cause skin irritation on contact, gastric problems if eaten, and respiratory problems if inhaled. Be sure to keep these out of reach!

10. Citronella products contain toxins: Citronella candles, oils, and insect coils can cause serious respiratory illnesses if inhaled, like pneumonia and if eaten, they can harm your pet’s nervous system Keep your pet at home and indoors in a quiet, secure space. This is the easiest way to ensure your pup has a safe and happy Fourth of July! Happy Independence Day from Doggie Vogue!

Dog Breed of the Month : The French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are sweet, gentle dogs that make excellent companions!

French Bulldogs originally came from Europe. Their eldest ancestors were ancient Greek dogs raised for blood sports. Once such sports were bannedand these ‘Bulldogs’ were unemployed, they were crossed with terriers and pugs decrease their size and morph them into companion dogs. A group of lace makers from Nottingham, who were uprooted by the industrial revolution, settled in Normandy, France. With them they transported many of these ‘miniature bulldogs’. They became prominent in France and were separated into their own breed in the late 1800’s. French Bulldogs were highly fashionable and were desired by society ladies and Parisian prostitutes alike as well as artists, writers, and fashion designers.

French Bulldogs are small, muscular and compact dogs. They have large, block heads and bat like ears. They can be white, brindle, fawn, or a mixture of brindle and white. Their fur is short and fine and they need only basic grooming, however their eyes and the folds on their face should be kept clean and dry to avoid infection. They typically weight between 25-28 lbs and do not need much exercise beyond a daily walk but they can rapidly become obese if overfed. These dogs usually live 10-12 years.

Because they have flat faces, their airways are constricted. They cannot live as outdoor dogs and shouldn't be outdoors for an extended amount of time when it is very hot or cold because they cannot adequately adjust their temperature. They can suffer from a variety of back and spinal diseases. They are prone to luxating patellas either as a result of injury or congenital deformities. They are also prone to eye issues such as cherry eye, glaucoma, corneal ulcers and cataracts. French Bulldogs typically require a cesarean to give birth because of the puppies’ large heads. Because of their extremely heavy chests, French Bulldogs have a lot of trouble swimming and can easily drown.

Like most companion dogs, Frenchies require close contact with humans. They are very easy going and clownish. They get along well with children and other pets but don’t like very rough play. They usually only bark out of necessity and because of their friendly nature, they don’t make very good watch dogs. They are well suited to apartment life and are content to stay indoors.

Fun Facts

1. Most French Bulldogs snore due to their flat faces.

2. French Bulldogs have earned the nickname “Frog Dogs” due to the way they lay with their back legs splayed out behind them.

3. The French Bulldog was originally called the "Boule-dogue Francais"

4. The French Bulldog was very popular with Parisian prostitutes and were nicknamed “The Prostitutes' Dog”. Postcards of prostitutes with their French Bulldogs were prevalent in France, some of which still exist today

5. Martha Stewart, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman, and David and Victoria Beckham are just a few of many proud celebrity Frenchie parents.

The month of June commemorates National Pet Preparedness Month. With all of the recent news coverage of the tornado destruction in Oklahoma and the looming hurricane season, we are reminded of the significance of having an emergency evacuation plan drawn up for our household. The most effective way to protect your family from the effects of a storm is to have a plan and it needs to include your pets. When a catastrophe, there is not always ample time to act. Having a set plan lined up could save the lives of your family and pets.

Locate a secure facility to take your pets. Local and state health and safety regulations don’t permit the Red Cross to admit pets in disaster shelters, so you will need seek out another choice. Make a list of pet friendly hotels outside your local area, including phone numbers, and store it with your disaster supplies. Inquire with friends and relatives if they would be willing to keep your animals in the event of a disaster. Whatever you choose, if you have vacate you're don't leave your pets behind. If it isn't safe enough for you, it isn't safe enough for your furry friends either. Store an emergency supply kit for your pet along with the ones for humans and be sure everyone knows where to find it. This should be noticeably labeled and easy to tote. Your pet’s kit should include:

• An extra dog collar, leash and harness
• Food, bowls, and bottled water (and a can opener if you feed canned food)
• Vet records and medicine
• Current pictures of your pet in case you become separated.
• Information on your pet’s feeding schedule, medical conditions, behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets unexpectedly.
• An extra dog bed or blanket and dog toys.
• Pet first aid kit
• Travelling carrier

Depending on the kind of disaster, some warnings are given out hours or even days ahead of time. Don’t shrug off these warnings. At the first sign of danger, act to protect your family and pets. Call ahead to validate emergency shelter arrangements. Be sure to bring all of your pets indoors at the first indication of a storm or disaster. They can become confused and scared and wander away. Make sure your pet has proper, up to date identification like a microchip and ID tags. Tags need to include your dogs’ name, address, telephone number, and immediate health needs. Write your pet’s name and your contact info on the pet carrier. Store all your emergency supplies and leashes as close to an exit as you can.

In the event that you are not at home when evacuation orders come, find a trusted neighbor or family member who would be willing to take your pets to you or shelter them. This person needs to be confident with your pets, know where your disaster supplies are, and have a key to your house.

Being prepared and having a plan will allow you to evacuate swiftly and safely with your pets but remember that animals react differently when they are under stress. Keep them on a leash at all times. Even the most trusting pets could get frightened and bolt, or try to attack you out of fear.

Memorial Day Safety Tips for Your Pet

Memorial Day Weekend is an ideal opportunity for you and your furry friend to kick back in the sun. This extended weekend is the kick off to summer fun! Hot weather, traveling, barbecues  and swimming all seem like a lot of fun, but these activities could present many dangers to your canine companion. Here are a few tips to ensure your fur baby has a safe and fun holiday weekend!

Keep your pooch hydrated: When exposed to hot weather, even the healthiest dog can get dehydrated, sunburn, or heat stroke. Make sure your pet has fresh water at all times. Our Handi-Drinks for dogs are an awesome portable water bowl!

Only use dog friendly products: Buy sunscreen and insect repellent formulated specifically for dogs. If your pet ingests products made from humans (by licking themselves) it can make them sick!

Never leave your dog unattended in the car: Even with the windows rolled down a bit, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket to deadly levels in just minutes. Even at just 70 degrees, a parked car is over 100 degrees inside with the windows rolled up.

Supervise your dog at all times around water: Whether you are in the pool or boating on a lake, never leave your pooch unsupervised around water. Contrary to popular belief, no all dogs know how to swim! A dog life preserver can help keep your pooch above water.

Keep fire starting materials out of your pet’s reach: Candles, matches, and lighter fluid can harm your dog’s stomach, lungs, and nervous system if eaten.

Watch what your pup eats: If you’re having a barbecue, your guests might want to treat your dog to some of their off limits people food. Any delectable treats left laying in your pooches reach can tempt him to dig in. These new foods can upset your fur baby’s stomach. Some are even toxic! Alcohol is also harmful to dogs. Keep it out of reach! Reward your deserving dog with a dog treat or bone and he will be more likely to leave your food alone!

Give your dog a quiet, cool place to rest: Keeping up with all the action can be exhausting to your furry friend. Make sure they have a comfy place to lay down in the shade to rest and relax. Our Cool Pup Dog Beds are a great way to cool off your pet! Have a safe and Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Dog Breed of the Month: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi

5-17-2013

Welsh Corgis are a very old breed. There is history of them recorded all the way back to the 11th century. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a descendant of the elder version of the breed, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The two breeds are very alike in looks.  The obvious difference is their tail – Cardigans have a long tail and Pembroke Corgis have no tail or have a stub. These dogs emanated from Wales, bred for herding as well as for hunting and guarding children. The two breeds once collectively were called Welsh Corgis despite their divergent appearances but in 1934 the Kennel Club separated them.

The Corgi is known for its short, squat legs. It has the body of a much larger dog but is usually only 10-12 inches tall from feet to shoulders and weighs around 30 lbs. There are 5 colors acknowledged by the AKC for Corgis: Red, with or without white markings, sable/white, fawn/white, red-headed tricolor (black dog with a red head and white markings), black-headed tricolor (black and red with red and white markings). Red is the most prevalent color. Corgis have a double coat and are heavy shedders. They do not need much grooming but de-shedding is a must as they shed all year round.

Corgis are one the healthiest dog breeds, as well as the longest living. The typically live 12-15 years. Diseases they are predisposed to are hip dysplasia, retinal atrophy, and epilepsy. Corgis have a fond love of food and if  they are fed too much, they can become very overweight.

Corgis are very friendly, bright dogs. Their natural herding instincts make them skilled at dog agility, obedience, fly ball, and tracking. They are very devoted and love to be involved with their family. They have a great desire to please, making them easy to train. Their alertness and intelligence make them great watch dogs. It is important to socialize these dogs at a young age with other dogs and people or anti-social behavior could develop. Their herding instinct can cause them to nip at ankles. They can be trained out of this behavior but are better suited for families with older children.

Fun Facts:

1. Welsh folklore states that the corgi is the preferred mount of fairy warriors. There is also a folk legend that says corgis were a gift to us  from the woodland fairies, and that the breed's markings were left on its coat by fairy harnesses and saddles.

2. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are famed for being the preferred breed of Queen Elizabeth II, who has owned more than 30 during her reign. These dogs have been favored by British royalty for more than seventy years.

3. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the shortest breed in the AKC herding group.

4. Corgis are prone to random bursts of energy. They will run and play for hours and are good at entertaining themselves.

5. Corgis lay with their legs sprawled behind them, in a ‘flying frog’ position.

Obie's Amazing Weight Loss Journeys

When Obie the dachshund came to live with his new owner, Nora, he weighed a whopping 77lbs and was so overweight he could barely walk. The normal weight range for a standard European dachshund is around 25-30 lbs, making poor Obie over twice as heavy as he should be. His previous owners were elderly people with failing health and they were no longer able to properly care for him. They showed their love for him with food, and this overfeeding left Obie very obese. A family member finally convinced them them that they could not provide the care Obie needed and he went to a dachshund rescue, and then his forever home with Nora.
With a background in animal science and the health care field, Nora was the perfect person to help this portly pup. She and her vet came up with a plan for Obie’s weight loss journey. Through a mixture of a prescription diet food, healthy snacks, and exercise, Nora has helped Obie to lose 42lbs since August, leaving him currently at 35lbs! Because of his extensive weight loss, he was left with a lot of loose, excess skin including a waddle dubbed his “bosom pile” on his chest that drug the ground and required him to wear a vest to hold it up.
Through hard work and diligence, Obie is nearing the end of his weight loss journey. This past Tuesday Obie underwent surgery to remove his excess skin, making him the first dog to have weight loss plastic surgery. In total they removed 2.5lbs of excess skin and he is recovering nicely. He still has a few more pounds to shed, but the hardest part is over. Throughout Obie's weight loss, Nora and Obie have been inspiring people everywhere they go and spreading weight loss and fitness information. With well over half the pet population overweight or obese, this information is very beneficial to owners and their pets. Two thumbs up to Obie and his owner for all their hard work and progress! This once pudgy pup has a whole new lease on life.

Dog Breed of the Month: The Miniature Pinscher

Miniature Pinschers - The King of Toys!

Despite what most people think, the Miniature Pinscher is not a scaled down Doberman! These small, attentive dogs were first bred in Germany and have some of the same ancestors as Dobermans but are a totally separate breed. Their premordial ancestors could possibly have been a combination of Italian Greyhounds and Dachshunds. “Pinscher” translates to “Terrier" in German and the Min Pin breed originated over 200 years ago, bred to hunt rats.

Miniature Pinschers are compact little dogs that stand 10-12 inches in height and weight about 8-10 lbs. They have a smooth coat and need only basic grooming Min Pins have a characteristic high step walk similar to that of horses. They have an arched neck and a muscular body. The ears and tail are often cropped. Typical coat colors are black and rust, chocolate and tan, or red.

While all breeds have congenital health problems, Miniature Pinschers are generally healthy dogs that live long lives. Life expectancy is around 15 years. Prevalent health issues are normally with the eyes or legs such cataracts, glaucoma, and hip dysplasia. Min Pins are also predisposed to obesity if they are not regularly exercised and are sensitive to colder temperatures. This breed will be grateful for a dog coat and dog boots in harsh weather.

Min Pins are spirited, brave, smart dogs. They are incredibly loyal and have a great deal of energy. Min Pins tend to be skilled escape artists and shouldn’t be left off leash. Because of their independence and intelligence, you must assert yourself as the pack leader or these little dogs can develop undesirable behaviors. Because of their small size, they make perfect apartment dwellers but also do well in environments with a large, closed in yard. Min Pins are excellent watch dogs. These curious dogs are very watchful and don’t understand their size, redering them fearless in the face of danger.

Fun Facts:

1. In Germany, this breed is known as Zwergpinscher. Pinscher refers to terriers, which are dogs bred as guardians or to hunt vermin. Zwerg means ‘dwarf.

2. The Min Pin’s nickname is the “King of Toys” though the breed is not actually a toy breed at all.

3. The miniature pinscher once came in harlequin like that which is found in the Great Dane

4. Until the early 1900's Miniature Pinscher popularity was primarily contained in Germany and the Scandinavian countries but has gained great popularity in the US since the first one was registered with the
AKC in 1925.

5. Originally the AKC recognized this breed as “Pinscher- Toy”. The name was officially changed to “Miniature Pinscher” in 1972.

National Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Month

Help protect abused and neglected pets!

This month the ASPCA embarked on their National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. There are immeasurable amounts of  blameless pets abused or neglected by their owners annually. This month is a perfect opportunity to increase awareness and assist abused animals. There are numerous incomplex things you can do to help eliminate animal cruelty in your community. Knowing who to report to is key. Each town does things differently; some depend on the police department to follow up on animal cruelty cases and some depend on the local animal control agency. If you suspect a case of animal cruelty, make sure to call and offer as many details about the incident as possible including type of cruelty, who was involved, dates, times, and where it took place. Take care to watch pets in your neighborhood. If you acquaint yourself with the pets that live near you, you’ll notice if an animal has lost a lot of weight or changed their demeanor. Here are some additional signs and symptoms of animal abuse:

• Tick or flea infestation

 • Wounds on the body

•Patches of missing fur

• Extremely thin

• Limping

• Repeatedly left alone without food or water

• Left outdoors in extreme weather

• Animals who cower in fear or act aggressively when owners approach

• Dogs who need medical attention and aren’t taken to the vet

• Pets housed with too many other animals

• Overgrown nails, matted fur, filthy

• Weakness, drowsiness, confusion

If you notice any animals showing any of these signs, or if you see any physical abuse such as hitting or kicking firsthand, be sure to call the authorities immediately. If you don’t want to give your name, you can always call anonymously. Animals rely on their owners to supply them with food, water, shelter, and kindness. Pets are innocent creatures and need you to step in if  they are suffering.

Five Fun Dog Facts

Our canine friends are the single most varied species on Earth. There are roughly 400 different breeds of dogs! Because of human's selectively breeding dogs, our precious pooches come in all shapes and sizes and the wide assortment of dog breeds surmounts any other creature on the planet. Here are some quick facts about a few of those breeds:
1. One kind of Pekingese is referred to as a “sleeve” because it was bred to fit into a Chinese empress’ sleeves, which was how it was often carried around.

2. The most intelligent dogs are reportedly the Border Collie and the Poodle, while the least intelligent dogs are the Afghan Hound and the Basenji.

3. Thirty percent of all Dalmatians are deaf in one or both ears.

4. The best dog to reportedly attract a date is the Golden Retriever. The worst is the Pit Bull.

5. Greyhounds appear to be the most ancient dog breed. “Greyhound” comes from a mistake in translating the early German name Greishund, which means “old (or ancient) dog,” not from the color gray.

Spring Cleaning Tips for Dog Owners

Spring is in the air! Temperatures are slowly increasing and us humans aren’t the only ones ecstatic about the pleasant weather! Our canine companions suffer just as much as we do during the long frigid months. As the days get longer, it’s time to start planning spring cleaning. While most homes do household spring cleaning, dog owners have more to tackle. Here are a few chores you might want to think about adding to your spring cleaning to-do list this year:

1. Clean out your dog’s toy box – Discard any broken or torn toys. Set aside any toys your pup doesn’t use and donate them to a local shelter. Give any remaining toys a good scrubbing – Wash plush toys in the washer and wipe down any rubber toys with a pet-safe cleaning product, such as a mixture of vinegar and water.

2. Go through treats and medication – Check expiration dates and throw away expired ones. Check prescriptions to see if any are expiring soon and if so, make a note to call your vet to set up an appointment.

3. Clean your dog’s bed – Wash any bedding your dog sleeps on. If your dog bed has reached the end of its life, now is a perfect time to purchase a new one.

4. Have your floors and upholstery professionally cleaned – Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping can only go so far. Our furry friends leave a build up of fur, dander, dirt every where they go. Having your carpet and upholstery cleaned yearly will prolong its life and make your home that much cleaner. If having it done professionally is to costly for you, many places rent out professional equipment by the hour, which works much better than any regular home appliance when it comes to getting rid of dirt and dander.

5. Make sure your pup is up to date – Inspect your dog’s tags and make sure that the information is up to date. If you’ve moved or changed your phone number, it’s time to purchase a new tag. Also check that the information is still legible – Tags get scratched and become unreadable. That’s the last thing you want if your pet gets lost!

And lastly and most importantly: Enjoy the beautiful weather! Spend some long awaited time outside with your fur baby! Go on a long walk, play fetch, take a trip to the dog park… The possibilities are endless. You and your canine companions have been cooped up for months. April is a perfect time to stretch your legs and spend some time in the sun!

Dog Breed of the Month: The Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are American Gentleman!

Boston Terriers are absolutely “All American” dogs. They were the first breed established in the US that was recognized by the AKC. With their cheerful and animated dispostion, high intelligence, and small size, the Boston Terrier makes an ideal companion. Bostons began around 1870 from a combination of Terrier and Bulldog lineage. First bred for fighting, the first Boston Terriers weighed in at around 40lbs but were later bred down and became companion dogs. The breed was originally shown in Boston in 1870 and was finally recognized by the AKC in 1893 and was also the first non-sporting dog bred in America.

Boston Terriers are compact, muscular dogs with large, bat-like erect ears, short tails and a short, square face. While black and white are the most common colors seen, Boston terriers come in a wide range of colors including brindle, seal, red, brown, all white, and black with white markings. They typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and their average life span is 11-13 years.

Every dog breed is prone to certain health problems. The main ailments that Boston Terriers suffer from are cataracts, luxating patellas, deafness, heart murmurs  mast cell tumors, and allergies. Because of their short muzzle they are a brachycephalic breed and cannot tolerate extreme heat or cold. A dog coat and dog boots can help keep these sensitive dogs warm in the winter time but they shouldn't be left outdoors for very long in the heat or cold.

Boston Terriers have a very easy going nature and get along well with children, strangers, and other pets as long as they are properly socialized. They are not difficult to house train and are not usually barkers. They shed very little and require only basic grooming. They are suited well for either and apartment life or active life.

Fun Facts:

1. In many editions of the book version of “The Wizard of Oz”, Toto has been illustrated as a Boston Terrier.

2. Due to the their markings resembling a tuxedo (in addition to their pleasant personality) the breed is commonly called the “American Gentleman” .

3. Boston Terriers were so popular in the US during the 1920’s that they represented between 20-30% of all dogs entered into shows.

4. The Boston Terrier was recognized by the state legislature as the "state dog of Massachusetts" in 1979.

5. Before they took the name Boston Terrier in 1889, these pups were called Round Heads, Bullet Heads,
and Bull Terriers.

St. Patrick’s Day is upon us! This boisterously merry day is noted for drinking green beer and eating traditional Irish foods, like cabbage and corned beef. These two festive ingredients might be delightful for you but they are both unlucky for your pooch! Alcohol can quickly poison your pet. Be sure to keep alcoholic beverages up and away from your canine friend! Classic St. Patrick’s day food - particularly corned beef – is fully of sodium, which can incite vomiting and diarrhea in your dog. If you want to offer your deserving dog a special St. Paddy’s Day dog treat, choose something dog friendly, like our Shamrock Dog Treats.

If you are throwing an Irish shindig at your home, be sure there is a quiet place away from the ruckus where your pets can relax. Strange people coming and going can make your pup nervous. People under the influence of alcohol can become loud and animated and this can frighten your pets. If you choose to take your dog to a parade or other outdoor festival, be on the lookout for drunk drivers and be sure sure your pooch is on a leash and has a light up or reflective dog collar after dark.

Outfitting our pets out in green for St. Patty’s Day can be a lot of fun. Make sure any clothing or accessories fit properly and don’t hinder movement or breathing. If your pet is just not happy with their outfit, don’t stress them out by forcing them to wear it. If you choose to dye your dog’s fur, only use something specifically formulated for pets, like our Dye Gel for Dogs or our PetPaint Color Spray.

Have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day!
